ACME Grand 1000km, 28th June 2018

Lulu Chic, Bernard Brown, and Suzannah Minns tackled the intimidating ACME Grand 1000km, a 3-day event. Here is their report, in the words of Lulu:

A bit too hot for a long ride but we made our way to Essex on Wednesday evening to ride the Acme 1000km. Disappointingly, out of 100 entries, only 40 started, and only 19 finished,
The combination of the heat and the Welsh hills took their toll and made for some tough riding,

It was a lovely scenic route down from Essex to Barry (apart from Ponty Hill – no fun on the tandem in the midday heat). After arriving in Barry, the route then did a loop out towards the valleys and over a few lumps (Rhigos, Penderyn, Devils Elbow) on to Neath and then back to Barry, before heading back to Essex for a well deserved beer.

Llandow Crit 3rd June 2018

Ajax/Sunset scooped plenty of points at Llandow last night. In the Cat 3/4 Luke Protheroe took 3rd.
In the E/1/2/3 David Middleton got his hands in the air out-sprinting Chris Gibbard (Bynea) from a 2 man break for about half the race. That despite breaking a rear wheel spoke with 5 laps to go!
Dan Maclean-Howell got himself in the points too coming in 6th.

Steve Taylor Memorial Road Race, 1st July 2018

Cardiff Ajax/Sunset Cycles were represented at the the Steve Taylor Memorial 2/3/4 Road Race by David Jarrom and David Middleton. A break of 8 got away on lap 4 of 6, including Daniel Colman, David Middleton and Alex Mitchell Touche, and worked well to get a gap of over a minute. Dan Colman (Pembrokeshire Velo) smashed the sprint and a photo finish resulted between David & Alex (who came 3rd and 4th respectively) to give a distinctly Welsh flavour to the podium.

Rowe and King Maindy Series, Round 11 (Weds 27th June 2018)

Ajax got involved in all the races at Maindy this evening.
Ellie Shaw stormed to victory in the Women’s E123 race, before Rhodri Lord, David Jarrom, Dafydd Rhys Thomas and Dan Maclean-Howell lined up in the 2/3. All bar Rhodri made it into the break, from which Dan Colman won the sprint fairly easily but Daf timed his burst well and came 3rd. David Jarrom finished 10th and Dan was somewhere in between (we’re not sure where exactly, sorry Dan!).
Rob Sanderson, David J and Dan also lined up in the E123 which was fast and pretty cagey at times. Josh Burns won with a well timed attack from the bunch and Rob tried a long range sprint but got passed on the line by Dan Colman and Kinsey McIlquham and finished 5th. Dan Maclean-Howell also finished top 10 again, I believe.
Jon Reilly and Helen Priest raced the Cat 4 only, Jon finding himself in a 2 man break close to the end and putting in his best sprint and finishing 2nd.

John Andrews Memorial Road Race – 22.04.18

A very welcome sunny day in Somerset was the setting for this Category 3/4 road race, which featured 3.5 laps of an undulating circuit with a 1km drag to finish.
There were a few early attempts to form breakaways, but the strong headwind blowing down one side of this course made it very difficult to get anything to stick, and the 1km climb of Kingsdon Hill brought most attackers back into the bunch. Rob Sanderson and James Dyke lined up for Ajax, but unfortunately James suffered a mechanical on Lap 1 and was forced to retire. Rob hung on grimly up the last climb and managed to fight into a position to contest the sprint finish, managing 10th.

Rowe & King Cat E123 Crit – Maindy – 20.04.18

Three Ajax riders lined up for this race, Rob Jones, Matt Williams and Rob Sanderson. The pace was fast and frenetic from the start, and a large breakaway group of around 15 riders escaped early and quickly opened up an unassailable gap. Rob S made it into the breakaway and contributed turns before trying to break off the front with a smaller group of about four other riders. This was sadly doomed to failure and the 2 leading groups came back together for the finish, with Matt Rowe leading out the sprint but Hefin Evans (Bynea) Josh Burns (Jif), coming past to take 3rd and 2nd respectively, and Kinsey McIlquham surging through to take the win.
